Introducing Tabz Tax: Sales Tax Calculated on Every Order

Sales tax is one of the quieter risks in a pharmacy. It rarely causes a crisis, but it steadily creates work and exposure in the background. Rates vary by jurisdiction. They shift depending on whether an order ships or gets picked up. And they change based on what's in the cart, because prescriptions for people, prescriptions for pets, over-the-counter items, and supplements are each taxed differently.

Most pharmacies handle this with a flat rate set at the customer-group level. That holds up until an order crosses a state line or a jurisdiction updates its rules, and then the flat rate is quietly wrong. Multiply that across locations, product categories, and delivery types, and keeping tax accurate becomes a maintenance job nobody asked for.

That is why we built Tabz Tax.

Tabz Tax is automated sales tax calculation built directly into Tabz Checkout and Keyed transactions. Instead of maintaining rates by hand, the correct rate is calculated in real time on every order.

How it works

Tabz Tax reads three inputs together, on every transaction:

• The delivery address, down to the local jurisdiction
• The shipment type and shipping amount
• The item type in the cart, whether that is RX human, RX pet, OTC, or more

Because those three are evaluated together, the rate reflects the actual order rather than a customer-group average. The same logic runs on Keyed transactions, so a manually entered order gets the same accuracy as online checkout.

What changes, and what doesn't

For patients, nothing changes. Taxes and Fees stays as a single line in the Order Summary and updates once the delivery address and shipment type are confirmed. The checkout they already know looks the same.

For your team, the ongoing work goes away. Maintaining tax rates across customer groups, locations, and product categories is no longer something anyone has to own.

A few things worth knowing

When Tabz Tax is on, it takes over rate calculation. It overrides the customer-group rate, and any tax rates coming from your PMS are set aside in favor of the real-time calculation. If the service is ever unreachable, Tabz Tax falls back to a tax amount based on your pharmacy's origin address, so checkout keeps moving and no order stalls.
